Medical Weight Management

A comprehensive, physician-guided approach to sustainable weight loss.

Medical Weight Management in Columbia, IL

Our medical weight management clinic takes a comprehensive approach to weight loss using evidence-based medicine, commercial meal preparations (specifically in the form of Opifast meal replacement system), medical grade nutrition planning, medical guided activity changes, behavioral modification, and when appropriate, FDA approved anti-obesity medications. We strongly believe that obesity is a disease that is 70% heritable.

While it is critical to have lifestyle and behavioral modification to treat the disease of obesity, many patients do end up needing FDA approved medications to treat their disease.

We also offer body composition measurements as a key component of our service to ensure overall success.

Dr. Wood is an active member of the Obesity Medical Association, a voting member of The Obesity Society, and a strong supporter of the Obesity Action Coalition.

What to Expect

When you first visit Total Body Renewal Weight Management, before we even meet you, we need to get to know you. That is why it is critical to the success of your visit that we have pre-visit questionnaire filled out called the Weight and Lifestyle Inventory Questionnaire or the WALI for short. This extensive questionnaire is critical to assessing the various types of obesity and coming up with an individualized plan for each patient. At the first visit, which takes anywhere from one to one and a half hours, you will get a full comprehensive history and physical exam by Board Certified Obesity Medicine specialist, EKG, and measurements on our SECA body composition scale and review of that data. During the initial visit we will discuss three plans dependent on the rate of weight loss desired with you at that time in detail. We will also discuss nutritional and FDA approved medication options for your weight loss journey. Dependent on your interest in meal replacement/nutritional supplements and interest in medication to assist in weight loss you will receive samples of Optifast as well as a comprehensive list of medications to review before the next visit. You will also receive an order for laboratory testing that will be critical for us to help make medical decisions not only on appropriate dietary recommendations but medication recommendations during your follow-up visit. We will also cover general lifestyle modification recommendations to get you started on your weight loss journey.

On your second visit, we will start by reviewing your laboratory data. We will do a second SECA body composition scale measurement to compare to your initial visit. This is significant, because as you lose weight we do not want you to lose muscle mass, and by tracking you with our state of the art body composition scale we can make adjustments in your diet and physical activity to ensure your muscle mass remains intact through your healthy lifestyle modification. Body compositions will be taken at each follow up visit during the active phase of weight loss. We will then review the dietary selections for the program and FDA approved medication, if appropriate to develop an individualized weight loss plan. This appointment will take about an hour. Our weight loss program is 20 weeks in total and at the end of the 20 weeks program as a team we will decide whether to transition to a maintenance program or continue on an active weight loss program. Throughout the year we host education classes that feature all aspects of lifestyle modification/medicine including behavioral, nutrition, fitness, sleep, stress management, etc. These are complementary while in an active or maintenance program and help support long term success.
